About 'psychology of weight loss'|The psychology of food and weight loss








Most               people               don't               stop               to               think               about               the               strong               role               the               psyche               plays               when               it               comes               to               issues               with               weight.

While               we               may               have               heard               medical               experts               talking               about               anorexia               nervosa               being               a               psychological               disorder,               there's               a               good               chance               that               most               people               don't               think               in               the               same               vein               when               it               comes               to               obesity               and               compulsive               overeating.

The               truth               is               that               being               overweight               and               weight               loss               has               a               lot               to               do               with               the               mind.

As               a               student               of               a               psychology               and               a               lifetime               member               of               the               "I               Need               to               Lose               Weight"               club,               I've               noticed               that               there               are               many               strong               links               in               the               way               people               think               and               their               weight               issues.

There               has               been               a               common               trend               in               others               I've               talked               to               who               struggle               with               their               weight.

This               trend               points               to               the               fact               that               weight               issues               are               based               largely               on               the               way               they               think,               both               consciously               and               subconsciously.
               Have               you               ever               told               yourself               you               need               to               lose               weight,               and               even               though               you               know               it's               true,               you               just               can't               summon               the               energy               to               eat               healthy               or               get               moving?

Your               mindset               feels               the               strongest               at               the               beginning               of               a               weight               loss               problem.

Lack               of               motivation               isn't               just               about               feeling               tired               or               thinking               you               don't               have               enough               time               to               get               healthy.

Little               ways               to               live               a               healthier               lifestyle               can               be               found               in               even               the               busiest               schedule.

The               hard               part               is               overcoming               the               automatic               psychological               excuses               that               your               mind               comes               up               with.
               The               following               are               several               ways               in               which               your               psyche               plays               a               role               in               starting               a               weight               loss               program.

I've               also               included               some               general               tips               to               overcome               them               and               change               your               way               of               thinking               to               accommodate               a               new,               healthy               lifestyle.
               Getting               out               of               your               comfort               zone               -               What               feels               good               to               your               body               is               generally               a               psychological               reaction               to               your               environment.

Those               who               enjoy               sitting               or               lounging               around               the               house               feel               comfortable               doing               so               because               their               mindset               is               that               relaxation               is               better               than               movement.
               While               everyone               needs               rest,               those               who've               made               exercise               a               way               of               life               can               attest               to               a               certain               enjoyment               that               working               out               brings.

Some               even               say               that               the               rush               of               endorphins               caused               by               exercise               is               downright               addictive.

Diagnosed               social               anxiety               can               validly               keep               some               people               away               from               the               gym,               but               most               people               simply               need               to               make               a               conscious               effort               to               focus               their               thinking               on               the               benefits               of               exercise.
               Use               small               tricks               to               do               this.

Promise               yourself               a               non               edible               reward               for               getting               in               so               many               consecutive               days               of               exercise.

Set               small               goals               that               have               nothing               to               do               with               weight               loss,               but               rather               with               what               you               are               physically               capable               of,               like               a               number               of               miles               you               want               to               walk               or               a               certain               amount               of               weights               you               want               to               be               able               to               lift.

By               focusing               on               the               positives               of               exercise,               you're               more               likely               to               break               out               of               your               comfort               zone               for               those               rushes               of               active               pleasure.
               You               may               need               a               "traumatic"               boost               -               For               many               people,               the               only               thing               that               gets               them               motivated               is               a               big,               usually               negative               event,               such               as               the               death               of               a               loved               one               or               a               particularly               humiliating               social               experience.

These               events               are               like               a               mental               kick               that               make               us               highly               aware               of               our               own               unhealthy               habits               and               give               us               an               instant               desire               to               fix               what               is               wrong.

Though               a               large               amount               of               extra               weight               can't               be               fixed               immediately,               taking               that               first               step               is               a               good               start.
               Since               no               one               wants               anything               negative               to               happen               for               their               own               personal               wake               up               call,               pick               avenues               that               may               be               able               to               shake               you               into               action               without               you               or               someone               else               getting               hurt.

Check               out               books               on               weight               loss               and               obesity               at               your               local               library.

Check               your               TV               listings               for               television               shows               that               focus               on               individuals               with               these               problems.

Go               to               websites               where               others               have               dealt               with               weight               issues               and               let               their               own               traumatic               and/or               motivating               stories               work               for               you.
               You               don't               have               the               time               or               the               energy               -               Experts               have               long               said               that               to               get               energy,               you               have               to               use               energy.

But               it's               hard               to               tell               that               to               someone               who               is               working               full               time               and               balancing               a               family               at               the               end               of               a               tiring               day.

Even               though               your               body               is               telling               you               one               thing,               train               your               mind               to               overpower               it               and               side               with               the               experts.

Exercise               as               a               regular               habit               will               give               you               the               energy               you               need               to               get               through               each               day               with               some               to               spare.
               People               let               their               mind               manipulate               them               out               of               a               workout.

Instead               of               focusing               on               how               tired               you               are,               focus               on               how               much               better               you'll               feel               when               you               get               your               body               moving.
               Many               of               us               who               need               to               lose               weight               think               "What's               the               point?

I               have               no               time               to               fix               healthy               meals               or               join               a               gym."               Healthy               living               does               not               have               to               be               an               all               or               nothing               prospect.

Don't               think               that               diving               into               a               weight               loss               programs               means               you               need               to               completely               overhaul               everything.

Take               a               walk               on               your               lunch               hour.

Eat               one               extra               piece               of               fruit               a               day.

Cut               your               portions               in               half.

Say               no               to               that               extra               piece               of               chocolate               from               the               candy               dish.

Making               a               prospective               weight               loss               program               bigger               than               it               needs               to               be               can               be               too               overwhelming               to               face.

Think               small               changes               and               you're               more               likely               to               be               able               to               handle               it.
               In               my               next               article               in               this               series,               I               will               be               focusing               on               the               psychological               hurdles               experienced               during               the               weight               loss               process.

Until               then,               start               thinking               about               the               ways               in               which               your               own               mind               is               keeping               you               from               living               a               healthier               lifestyle.

Overcoming               the               psychological               problems               will               help               make               the               physical               changes               easier.
