Are               they               or               aren't               they?

That               is               the               question.

Are               these               highly               popular               and               very               trendy               weight               loss               energy               drinks               safe               for               you               in               losing               weight?

Based               on               my               research               stemming               from               a               variety               of               articles               online,               from               both               medical               and               nutritional               experts,               I               would               say               the               consensus               is               strong.

No,               they               are               not               safe.

Mostly               the               articles               state               the               reasons               they're               unsafe               are               due               to               high               sugar,               artificial               sweeteners,               and               caffeine               content.

As               a               result               these               weight               loss               energy               drinks               have               contributed               to               sleep               difficulties,               irregular               heartbeat,               obesity,               and               other               health               problems.

Some               countries               in               Europe               have               even               banned               energy               drinks.
First               let's               find               out               more               about               weight               loss               energy               drinks               from               some               medical               doctors.

Dr.

Astrid               Pujari,               M.D.

in               an               article               titled               "Energy               drinks               aren't               worth               the               buzz",               from               The               Seattle               Times               newspaper,               stated               even               if               you               read               the               label               to               avoid               caffeine               from               these               drinks               they               tend               to               disguise               it               or               don't               clearly               state               the               exact               amount.

Even               herbs               such               as               guarana               and               yerba               mate               contain               caffeine,               which               many               people               do               not               know.
               Dr.

Pujari               says               when               you               take               caffeine               in               large               amounts               it               could               potentially               cause               a               heart               attack,               or               abnormal               heart               rhythms,               while               gulping               down               several               cold               beverages               a               day               too               quickly.

She               also               states               you               should               never               use               energy               drinks               when               you               exercise,               because               the               caffeine               acts               as               a               diuretic,               causing               severe               dehydration.
From               CBS'               The               Early               Show,               medical               correspondent               Dr.

Jennifer               Ashton,               focused               on               a               company               with               a               new               energy               drink               called               Celsius               that               claims               drinking               a               single               12-ounce               serving               could               result               in               your               body               burning               as               much               as               100               calories.

The               company               also               conducted               several               blind               studies               where               drinking               it               before               exercise               could               raise               metabolism               12               percent,               burn               93               percent               more               fat,               build               50               percent               more               muscle               mass               than               without               it,               and               also               burn               calories.

.
               Then               Dr.

Ashton               emphasized               those               studies               were               paid               for               by               Celsius.

More               importantly,               their               website               devoted               to               the               drink               also               stated,               "Celsius               alone               does               not               produce               weight               loss               in               the               absence               of               a               healthy               diet               and               regular               exercise."               She               also               mentioned               those               claims               are               "probably               a               little               heavy               on               the               marketing               and               a               little               lighter               on               the               medicine."               The               bottom               line               is,               "You've               got               to               take               in               less               than               you               burn               to               lose               weight."
Celsius,               like               so               many               other               energy               drinks,               contains               a               lot               of               caffeine,               which               is               a               stimulant.

It               is               also               the               equivalent               of               2               cups               of               coffee.

Besides               the               natural               source               of               caffeine,               guarana,               that               we               find               most               of               the               time               in               the               weight               loss               energy               drinks,               other               ingredients,               such               as               green               tea               leaf               extract,               may               have               an               effect               on               the               metabolism               too.

This               revs               up               your               metabolism               in               the               short-term,               but               not               long-term.

Also,               ginseng,               taurine,               gingko,               and               B               vitamins               are               also               found               in               these               drinks,               with               little               evidence               they               cause               weight               loss.

Even               though               the               energy               drink,               Celsius,               contains               only               40               calories,               many               others               contain               a               large               amount               of               sugar               and               sodium.

Nevertheless,               Dr,               Ashton               stated               more               independent               studies               need               to               be               conducted               before               a               final               conclusion               could               be               made.
In               one               particular               nutrition               article               it               stated               instead               of               losing               weight               from               all               the               energy               you'll               receive               from               weight               loss               energy               drinks               the               cruel               joke               instead               is               weight               gain.

Someone               stated               they               drank               several               energy               drinks               a               day               and               had               so               much               pep,               in               addition               to               losing               10               pounds,               only               to               become               lethargic               and               gain               all               the               weight               back.

This               has               certainly               been               my               personal               experience               in               the               past.

According               to               Ann               Louise               Gittleman,               Ph.D               from               iFitandHealthy.com               some               experts               have               said               energy               drinks               could               be               the               blame               for               post               fatigue               and               weight               gain.

That's               because               those               beverages               may               cause               sluggishness,               in               part               because               their               sweeteners               suppress               orexin,               a               brain               chemical               that               maintains               wakefulness.

Not               only               that,               the               high-fructose               corn               syrup               and               artificial               sweeteners               in               these               drinks               may               hinder               the               body's               ability               to               count               calories,               triggering               unconscious               overeating.
Another               nutrition               article               states               it's               rare               to               find               weight               loss               products               not               containing               a               nervous               system               stimulant               for               energy.

These               types               of               weight               loss               products,               e.g.

energy               drinks               for               weight               loss,               perpetuate               the               myth               that               effective               weight               loss               comes               from               stimulating               the               nervous               system               with               high               amounts               of               caffeine,               ephedra,               gurana               root,               or               others               to               lose               weight.

When               you               keep               elevating               this               nerve               response               it               can               be               very               dangerous,               in               addition               to               an               energy               crash               and               a               loss               of               energy               production               in               the               body.

In               other               words,               you               simply               crash               and               burn.
To               remedy               all               of               this               system               overload               of               sugar               and               caffeine               in               your               body               what               can               one               do               then?

Katherine               Zeratsky,               R.D.,               L.D.,               a               nutritionist               from               the               Mayo               Clinic               in               response               to               energy               drinks               stated               quite               simply               in               her               article               "get               adequate               sleep,               exercise               regularly               and               eat               a               healthy               diet.

These               strategies               not               only               will               increase               your               energy               in               the               short               run,               but               also               will               help               you               maintain               your               overall               physical               and               mental               fitness               in               the               long               run."
In               summary,               we               know               that               a               majority               of               energy               drinks               have               one               thing               in               common,               caffeine,               to               increase               energy               in               the               body               which               may               ultimately               lead               to               a               short-term               intentional               or               unintentional               weight               loss.

Now               the               other               question               remains.

Are               energy               drinks               for               weight               loss               safe?

Dr.

Jennifer               Ashton               from               her               report               earlier               on               said               the               average               healthy               adult               who               drinks               an               occasional               energy               drink,               it's               probably               safe               for               them.

However,               the               additional               caffeine               may               not               be               a               good               idea               for               people               with               high               blood               pressure               and               women               with               osteoporosis.

Most               definitely               these               weight               loss               energy               drinks               are               certainly               not               recommended               for               pregnant               women,               people               with               heart               conditions,               or               children.
